Is Telehandler Certification Required by OSHA?

Certification involves formal instruction, hands-on training, and an operator evaluation. Operators must also be at least 18 years old. What Are the Testing Requirements for Telehandler Certification?

To earn your telehandler certification and certificate, you’ll need to pass a short quiz after each module and a comprehensive final exam.  The course includes six module quizzes, requiring a passing score of 80% or higher. You can retake the quizzes as many times as needed. The final exam has 20 questions, and you must score at least 70% to pass. You’ll also have unlimited attempts to pass the exam. After completing the course, your employer will demonstrate how to operate the equipment specific to your jobsite and explain any associated hazards. Certification is completed once you pass an employer-led evaluation.

What Happens After I Complete the Telehandler Training?

After finishing the course, you’ll receive a Powered Industrial Truck Operator Evaluation Form. Provide this form to your employer for use during your operator evaluation.  Your employer will:  Demonstrate how to operate the telehandler you’ll be using. Discuss any specific hazards present in your work environment. Conduct a performance evaluation to ensure you can safely operate a telehandler. Once you pass the evaluation and both you and your employer sign the evaluation form, you’ll officially be certified to operate a telehandler.

How Long Is Telehandler Certification Valid?

Your telehandler certification is valid for three years. Once it expires, you’ll need to complete another operator evaluation conducted by your employer. For safety, it’s recommended to complete refresher training every three years.

In addition to these scenarios, OSHA mandates an employer-led evaluation every three years to maintain certification.
